Shopify for home and furniture brands
Furniture stores live or die on shipping. Large items need freight rates, white-glove tiers and delivery-zone rules, and live carrier rates are a plan decision on Shopify (Advanced and Plus, or Grow with an add-on). The B2B side is usually a trade program for interior designers, which maps cleanly to a native catalog with net terms.
Shipping is the first decision, not the last
Third-party carrier-calculated rates (FedEx, UPS, freight apps) are included on Advanced and Plus. They can be added to Grow if you pay yearly or add $20 a month, and they're not available on Basic1. Most furniture brands use a freight-quoting app, which needs those rates. So before choosing a plan, decide how each product ships: parcel, LTL freight, or local delivery with your own crew.
Note that native B2B checkout doesn't support local delivery or pickup points2, so trade orders delivered by your own van need a workaround, usually a manual shipping line on a draft order.
How furniture specifics translate
| Need | On Shopify | Note |
|---|---|---|
| Freight vs parcel by product | Shipping profiles per product group | Separate profiles keep freight rates off small decor items |
| White-glove delivery tier | A shipping rate name in the freight profile, or a carrier app service | Price it per zone, not per item, to stay predictable |
| Fabric and finish swatches | Free swatch products in a hidden collection, limit 1 per order | Quantity limits for retail need an app or checkout rule |
| Made-to-order lead times | Lead-time text on the product via metafields | Shopify has no native lead-time field |
| Designer trade program | B2B company per studio, with a trade catalog (e.g. 20% off) | Price lists below Plus are limited to 3 catalogs3 |
| Trade net terms | Net 30 on the studio's location4 | Credit limits aren't native; review overdue invoices manually |
Moving a furniture catalog
Furniture catalogs carry a lot of option combinations (fabric × leg finish × size) plus heavy imagery. Variant counts usually stay well below 2,048, but variant images need mapping one by one. Products that are discontinued but still have search traffic should redirect to the closest current piece; collection URLs carry most of the organic traffic, so they redirect one-to-one.
What to check first
Use the migration cost calculator to size the move, and the B2B plan fit check to see whether Grow or Advanced makes more sense once carrier rates are counted. If your trade program is the main wholesale channel, the Counter Setup covers it.
