Shopify for auto parts sellers: fitment, catalog size and dealer pricing
Auto parts is the hardest catalog type we move. Buyers search by year, make and model, and the fitment data (usually ACES, with product attributes in PIES) has no native home in Shopify. A fitment app or search provider carries it. Large catalogs also meet Shopify's variant creation limit, and dealer or installer pricing becomes B2B catalogs.
Fitment lives in an app, not in variants
ACES is the Auto Care Association's standard for application (fitment) data, and PIES is its standard for product attributes12. A single brake pad can fit hundreds of vehicles. Modelling that as variants would blow past Shopify's 2,048-variant limit and make no sense to shoppers. A year/make/model app stores fitment against the SKU and filters search. Your ACES file feeds it; your PIES attributes become metafields.
Parts-catalog mechanics on Shopify
| Requirement | Approach | Limit to know |
|---|---|---|
| Year / make / model search | Fitment app fed from your ACES file | App pricing often scales with SKU or fitment-row count |
| Product attributes (dimensions, material) | PIES fields mapped to metafields and filters | Filters need metafield definitions set up first |
| Very large catalogs | Bulk import by Matrixify in stages | At 500,000+ variants, new variants are capped at 10,000 per day below Plus3 |
| Core charges | A separate core-charge product added with the part | Refunds on core returns are handled manually or by app |
| Dealer and installer pricing | B2B catalogs per tier | 3 catalogs below Plus4 |
| Heavy or oversized items | Separate shipping profile and carrier rates | Carrier rates depend on plan5 |
Plan the import around the daily cap
A store with more than 500,000 variants can only create 10,000 new variants a day below Plus3. For a 600,000-SKU catalog that means most products go in during the first days and the rest trickle in. We schedule the import so the best-selling lines, ranked by your sales data, go first and redirects only go live for products that already exist. Catalogs above roughly 50,000 products fall under a Data Change Order. See how we work.
Dealer accounts
Repair shops and dealers expect their own price, Net 30 and a quick way to reorder by part number. Native B2B covers the first two, and the quick order list lets a buyer enter quantities for many variants on one page. If you need more than three price tiers below Plus, compare the wholesale apps.
