Shopify for beauty and cosmetics brands with salon accounts
Beauty brands usually run two businesses: replenishment-driven retail (often with subscriptions) and professional accounts such as salons, spas and stockists. Shopify handles both, but not in the same checkout, because native B2B doesn't support subscriptions. Shade ranges fit the variant model easily. US brands also carry MoCRA product listing and labeling duties, and the catalog should be built so that data has a home.
Subscriptions and wholesale don't share a checkout
Shopify's B2B checkout doesn't support subscriptions, accelerated checkouts like Shop Pay, or tipping1. For a beauty brand that means retail customers keep their auto-replenish, while salons reorder through the B2B side with net terms or a vaulted card. Salons reorder the same SKUs on a rhythm, so the quick order list and reorder do most of what a subscription would.
Pro and stockist accounts on Shopify
| Account need | Native setup | Caveat |
|---|---|---|
| Professional pricing (back-bar sizes) | A pro catalog that includes back-bar SKUs hidden from retail | Back-bar SKUs need publishing only to the B2B catalog |
| Stockist minimum opening order | Quantity rules plus a minimum order note; or review the first order as a draft | There's no native order-value minimum for B2B |
| Licence verification for pros | Company created after you check the licence on the application | Approval is manual unless an app or Flow handles it |
| Testers and display units | Zero-price or discounted SKUs in the stockist catalog | Track them as SKUs so inventory stays right |
| Net 30 for spas and salons | Payment terms per location2 | No native credit limit |
Give MoCRA data a place in the catalog
The Modernization of Cosmetics Regulation Act (MoCRA) requires facility registration, product listing with ingredients, and labeling updates such as a US contact for adverse event reports3. None of that is a Shopify feature, but a migration is the right moment to add metafields for ingredient lists (INCI), the responsible person and listing numbers, so the data lives with the product instead of in a spreadsheet. We set up the fields; the regulatory content is yours to supply.
Shades, sizes and swatches
A foundation in 40 shades × 2 sizes is 80 variants, comfortably inside Shopify's 2,048 limit4. The work is in swatches: each shade needs a colour value or swatch image tied to the variant, which Horizon can display as swatches when the option values carry them. Moving from WooCommerce or Magento means rebuilding those links, so we map them in the import file rather than by hand. See the WooCommerce migration details.
